Katariina Kekoni: The Fear of Unbeing
The collection explores dissociation — the unsettling feeling of life and one’s own body appearing unreal, and the fear of losing touch with reality.Dissociation is a trauma-related function of the human brain, a natural defense mechanism meant to protect us from overwhelming stress or traumatic experiences.People describe dissociative experiences as frightening and disorienting. These sensations can include life, objects, or people feeling unreal. One’s own body feeling foreign or not like ”one’s own”. Fear, dizziness, loss of time or memory, and a sense of freezing or detachment from one’s actions. This collection brings dissociation to the surface through clothing and fashion — giving form to the invisible and expression to the unspeakable.
